Gulf Stream 'engine' weakening, say scientists

Quote From Source:

Scientists have found clear evidence that the ocean current "engine" helping to drive the Gulf Stream is weakening.

Disruption to the conveyor-belt mechanism that carries warm water to Britain's shores was the basis of the Hollywood disaster movie The Day After Tomorrow.

In the film, a breakdown of the system caused by global warming triggers a sudden cataclysmic ice age.

Scientists say such predictions are fantasy - but the real evidence does point to a possible 1C cooling over the next two decades.

More alarmingly it may indicate the beginning of an accelerating change with more severe consequences.

    Not really

  • I think what Fatal means is that we were discussing what appeared to be a dramatic slowdown that happened around mid April, the media wasn’t saying a word about it. Until now. It seems that Britney Spears’ meltdown was somehow more important.

Yes, there have been many papers written stating that this may happen in the next 10, 20, 100 years written in the last couple of years, but nothing was being mentioned about any slowdown that was happening within the last 5 weeks or so.

I am not a scientist and have no idea if this is related to the record cold and late-season snow we had around Easter, but this is around the time the current almost came to a complete stop.

Glad they finally caught up ;)

Exactly what I was talking about, thank you for clearing that up.

We have seen it stutter and slow….but this time it would appear it came to a complete halt. This should have been way bigger news than the 2006 slowing. They jury is still out on the effect it will have. Some say ice age, some say just colder times in Britian and areas around it. I’m just here for the ride.

Except that report was published in Nov 2005. They were WAY AHEAD of everyone….

You are absolutely correct. I looked at the wrong date :D :P

Oh well, So they are still not talking about it then.

  • Oh well, So they are still not talking about it then.

    Indeed. Anyone know why?

  • My guess would be more focus on high gas prices, the still far off 2008 presidential elections, and Paris Hilton’s anguish over going to jail. Oh, and American Idol’s ratings are going down.

It really does seem to me that the media would pick up on something like this if it looks to be “in progress” but may not be saying anything as to not alarm folks. I have no idea why no one is talking about it. I have read a few stories saying that a disruption will never happen, and if it did the effect would be negligible. Maybe that is correct and we have nothing to worry about (but I don’t believe that for one minute). <shrug>

I have been looking for some more recent stories but haven’t has any luck googling them. What tools do you guys use to research things like this in your spare time? I would like to learn where and how to look at the data myself and be able to intelligently participate on these forums :)

  • I’m guessing that most reporters don’t have the knowledge to figure out what it all could mean to the world at large. And then you add in that they’d have to bring it down enough so that every day Mr/Ms American can understand it, and you’ve got too much work at hand. Once it gets where we’re having severe problems from it we’ll hear a story, but it’ll most likely be wrong anyway. Meanwhile we can all watch Paris cry about having to spend 45 days in jail that she “doesn’t deserve” for breaking laws that apparently don’t apply to her.

  • I have read a few stories saying that a disruption will never happen

Lemme guess. The Realclimate buffons. Right????

Once it gets where we’re having severe problems from it we’ll hear a story, but it’ll most likely be wrong anyway.

Garunteed to be blamed on AGW….

  • The media doesn’t understand this. They won’t be interested until it gets juicy.

Once people are dying from the cold, then it’ll become a page 12 news story.

The weather isn’t sexy unless it disrupts driving and airports.

Our corporate news people are only hired after they demonstrate they are full members of the oldest secret society on the planet: ‘The Three Monkey Society’ our reporters and editors must show they will See, Hear, And Speak no evil about our leaders and other fellow members of this societies mistakes and crimes. ESPECIALLY if it is a really big Boo Boo.

The bigger and more real the threat, the less likely they are to report on it. A real threat means real costs thery might have to pay. Perish such a thought.

They are paid not to think except about Gossip i.e Paris Hilton, Niclole, etc. so the rest of us can be distracted from the real costs their inactions are causing us. After awhile, they can not think honestly about anything.

Hence, not reportin on the glaringly apparant GS stopping. The accelerating apperance of cold spots all across the Atlantic where none were seen before, yet they will not see them because they have been trained to NOT notice any real discrepancies.

How can we help each other is the real question?

We certainly will not get any help from our so called government leaders.

I will start a forum on the http://no1stcostlist.com/index.php to discuss how we can help one another. Since we all seem to be separated geopgraphically, it may only be moral support but practical suggestions will almost certainly arise.

As a scientist, I have had publication of a major discovery blocked, but at least I knew why it was blocked; it upset some very big applecarts. I knew establishments could ignore a lot; but this; my God, these people are functionally insane and they are our ‘leaders’..

Clearly we are not a real civilization.

  • these people are functionally insane and they are our ‘leaders’..

A *perfect* description of 21st century america.
